Introduction

The Certificate in Fire Science and Civil Protection has been developed by ICP, representatives of Fire and Rescue Services, and other professionals. The content and structure of the qualification has been established to reflect the best professional practice.

Aims of the Qualification

The Certificate in Fire Science and Civil Protection has been designed to enable individuals to demonstrate a wide range of critical knowledge and understanding relevant to fire science, managing fire/ rescue situations and determining measures for protection against fire.

Target Audience

This qualification will meet the needs of:

  • those employed in fire and rescue service roles across the world, particularly those who are either already in municipal firefighting roles or those who wish to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding relevant to the role of fire and rescue services manager in preparation for promotion into this role;
  • those operation in specialist fire and rescue contexts, such as aviation or fire prevention/fire safety roles, who need to develop and apply a wide range of knowledge and understanding of their role;
  • Other fire professionals and those within related industries of the built environment who wish to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of fire-related subjects.

Entry Requirements

To qualify for entry into the Certificate in Fire Science and Civil Protection programme, a candidate must satisfy the following requirements:

  • A minimum of 5 Ordinary Level subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and any Science subject (Physics, Chemistry, or Integrated Science/ Combined Science).
  • Prior experience or training in Firefighting, emergency response, security services, or disaster management, voluntary work in civil protection or community safety may also be considered (Optional but preferred).
  • Candidates must pass a basic fitness test (endurance test). Candidates must also provide a medical fitness certificate confirming they are fit for duty.
  • Candidates to be at least 18 years old
  • Police Clearance, First Aid Certification and Aptitude test.

Qualification Structure

To be awarded the Certificate in Fire Science and Civil Protection, the candidate must complete both the theoretical and practical phases of the training programme. Candidates who successfully complete the theoretical training phase will undergo a practical 6-month work-related learning at a designated place.

To qualify for work-related learning, candidates must pass four mandatory modules as follows:

  • FSCP 101: Fire Engineering Science
  • FSCP 102: Fire Operations
  • FSCP 103: Fire Safety
  • FSCP 104: Management and Administration in Fire and Rescue Services
  • FSCP 200: Work Related Learning Report
  • FSCP 201: Industrial Mentor’s Report

MODULE SYNOPSES

Fire Engineering Science

This module provides candidates with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their understanding of fire engineering science. The content of the module has been designed to reflect the technical knowledge that fire professionals need in order to understand the behaviour of fire including the chemistry of fire and the science that underpins firefighting techniques and protecting against fire.

         

Fire Operations

This module focuses on the strategies and activities required to successfully resolve diverse fire and rescue operations scenarios.

Fire Safety

This module focused on fire safety issues in relation to the built environment, covering methods of construction and methods of detecting and protecting buildings and people from fire.

Management and Administration in Fire and Rescue Services

This module focuses on the importance of effective management and administration skills. It covers organisation structure, leadership and management, performance management, organisation systems and training and development.
