PREAMBLE

As an applied science, agricultural economics draws from economics tools and other disciplines to confront social economic problems related to rural poverty, food security, and the various challenges farmers and other allied activities. The Department seeks to contribute to the development of knowledge and economic theory with which to better address contemporary and prospective social issues in agricultural production. Our faculty, staff, and graduates are to be noted for developing contemporary curricula and programs, conducting high quality research, and disseminating new knowledge in these areas.

Welcome to the Department Agricultural Economics

To be excellent in teaching and research in the fields of Agricultural Economics and Development, while being immersed in the realities of rural Manicaland, Zimbabwe and Africa.

To engage students in the use of economic analysis for making decisions involving agribusiness, nature and resources. The Department of Agricultural Economics engages people in the use of economic analysis for making decisions involving agribusinesses, natural resources, and communities through the pursuit of learning, leadership, diversity, professional development, and excellence at national & regional level.


1. Respond to high-priority issues facing society in agribusiness (including food and fibre production, supplying inputs, processing products, and marketing), natural resources, environmental quality, and communities.
2. To equip students with economic and business principles that can be applied on day to day agribusiness related activities
3. Conduct applied research programs to analyse business and public policy issues and respond to high-priority societal needs in solving economic problems.
4. Create a professional environment conducive to promoting teamwork among faculty, staff, and students as they strive for excellence in the pursuit of the Department’s goals.
5. To capacitate students with leadership or consultative skills that are important in making sound decision in agricultural production, policy making and other related programs or services.

Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics and Development Honours Degree (4 years) – Full time

Normal Entry

Any 2 ‘A’ levels  in Commercials/ Agriculture and any
relevant subject and good passes in ‘O’ level Biology, Chemistry, Physics,
Physical Science and Mathematics may be considered OR a Diploma/Higher National Diploma  in Agriculture.

Visiting School Programme

Diploma/Higher
National Diploma in Agriculture or any other relevant tertiary qualification.

OR

Any 2 ‘A’ levels
in Commercials/ Agriculture or Arts and any relevant subject and good passes in
‘O’ level Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Physical Science and Mathematics.

At least one year working experience in the
relevant field (proof of employment required).
