Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences (MSUAS) last week hosted a workshop aimed at equipping small-scale miners with knowledge on safe mining practices, health and safety awareness, and sustainable mining. The event took place at the Fernhill Campus in Mutare.

Held in collaboration with the Research Council of Zimbabwe, the workshop drew small-scale miners from across the country.

In his welcome remarks, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Applied Sciences and Technology, Dr Benias Nyamunda, said the workshop formed part of the university’s community engagement initiatives in line with the heritage-based Education 5.0 model.

“Small-scale mining is a vital sector that provides employment, foreign currency for the country, and economic opportunities for many communities. However, it requires careful management to ensure environmental sustainability and social responsibility. This workshop is of great importance as it provides a platform to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing small-scale miners, thereby fostering safe and sustainable mining practices in Manicaland Province,” said Dr Nyamunda.

The workshop also aimed to strengthen MSUAS’s academic and research capacity, while enhancing its community engagement efforts.

Speaking on behalf of the small-scale miners, Mr Shylock Chikwengo commended MSUAS for hosting the workshop and sharing knowledge on best mining practices.

“These platforms help us as small-scale miners to gain practical knowledge that will assist us in conducting our mining operations more effectively,” said Mr Chikwengo. “The workshop also provided an opportunity to briefly engage on the challenges and opportunities we encounter in our daily operations.”

MSUAS continues to position itself as a driver of national development by making academic expertise accessible to key sectors such as mining.
