In a bid to nurture a generation of innovators and entrepreneurs, Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences (MSUAS), in collaboration with the Public Service Commission (PSC), recently hosted a highly subscribed public lecture aimed at empowering young talent and enhancing employability in Zimbabwe.

Running under the theme “Empowering Future Innovators: Harnessing Modern Sciences, Sustainable Development and Employability in Zimbabwe,” the lecture brought together industry experts, academics and students to explore the critical role of innovation and skills development in driving sustainable growth and job creation.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Albert Chawanda, the Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Upenyu Guyo, underscored the importance of integrating academic knowledge with practical skills, entrepreneurship, and innovation to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market.

“The relationship between MSUAS and the PSC continues to strengthen each year, anchored on a shared commitment to building a knowledge-driven, innovative, and prosperous Zimbabwe,” said Prof. Guyo.
“The future belongs to educational institutions and organisations that harness the transformative power of science, innovation, and technology — the key drivers of sustainable development and national prosperity.”

Delivering his presentation, PSC Commissioner Professor Carrol Temba Khombe challenged students to apply their skills towards solving societal challenges and fostering sustainable development, noting that employability in today’s world requires more than academic qualifications.

“The PSC views universities such as MSUAS not just as educational facilities, but as strategic partners for national human capital development as we strive to realise Vision 2030,” Prof. Khombe said.
“Our mission is to attract, retain, and manage a competent and motivated workforce. To the students, your employability rests on three pillars — technical competence, transversal skills and ethical leadership. Your work is not just a degree requirement; it is your direct contribution to building a prosperous, sustainable, and scientifically advanced Zimbabwe.”

The collaboration between MSUAS and the PSC reflects a shared vision of nurturing a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship, and scientific inquiry in the country’s tertiary education landscape.

Looking ahead, the two institutions agreed to formalise their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen collaboration in areas of mutual interest. Among the key focus areas will be the creation of internship and job placement opportunities for MSUAS students within the public service, as well as joint initiatives to promote innovation and skills development aligned with national priorities.
